We officially only have two real days of class left this semester and all that stands between me and the summer is a research paper and an orgo exam.

After doing two all nighters in a row (not a good choice) and having end of the year wrap ups for clubs, I’m definitely starting to feel the burn. Well, I guess its time to pick up some books at the library and get down to business.

(The above picture is from Art Con Prom, a little end of the year shindig that the Art conservation club puts on. I’m on the exec board, so it was great to see it all come together and get a little bit of break from the end of the year madness. And in case you’re wondering, the theme was Living Paintings hence the Frieda Khalos, Andy Warhol, and Liechtensteins.)

The Monuments Men were a group of men and women from thirteen nations, most of whom volunteered had expertise as museum directors, curators, art scholars and educators, artists, architects, and archivists. The Monuments Men job description was simple: to save as much of the culture of Europe as they could during combat.

Since this week is orgo week and my brain cannot produce words or string them together into sentences (the fact that I have gotten this far is pretty impressive), I’m going to post some interesting pictures. I have been wanting to go to this ever since Freshman year and for some reason never have until now. It was so much fun and a lot bigger than I expected. They had live music, baby Ag school animals, UDairy, a plethora of food options, and a plant sale. You say plants and baby sheep and I’m there. By the end of the day, I happily skipped away with bake sale treats and an awesome new cactus.

Today was one of the most stressful and fulfilling days I have...

Today was one of the most stressful and fulfilling days I have had in a long time. No, it had nothing to do with work or school. Long story short, on my way to Walgreens to pick up shampoo I somehow ended up with a 3 week old kitten. Commence the frantic search for a safe place to take the kitten so it could be fed and cared for (sadly, stashing kittens underneath my dorm room bed is frowned upon by school officials.) Two hours, a million calls, and one dead phone later, the little guy was snuggled up in a car on his way to a foster family. There is no tiptoeing around that. We have all talked to those long graduated adults still paying off their college loans. It’s a HUGE financial investment that you and/or your family will most likely be paying for years down the road. But that is exactly what it is, an investment. For me, my college choice came down to available majors, cost, and value, with value trumping all. University of Delaware was definitely not my cheapest option, not even second or third, but I had to think about what I was paying for and the value of my education here. Not only did it give me what I wanted in location and major, but it had the academics that would allow me to get into grad school or get a job. I cannot say much about sports or any other major, but I can say that because of the resources and faculty within my ARTC and ARTH departments, I have received some amazing opportunities that I would never have had at any other institution. Being only a Junior, I have have had hands-on internships in object, archaeological, and painting conservation. I have interned at an institution that I had dreamed of working at as a kid. I am going to be able to do mosaic conservation in Italy. I have had access to talented and well-known people within my field and I know that the people who surround me legitimately want me to succeed.

So, although I will be paying off more debt than I had original planned, every time I send a check in, I will know I’m getting a whole lot of bang for my buck!

You've got mail!

Over winter break I was going on a little cleaning spree. As I was tearing apart my closet I came across a big yellow envelope with a shinny blue “Congratulations!” on it. It was definitely a big day the day that envelope came in the mail. I’m pretty sure it was the first acceptance I had received, so it truly brought college to my doorstep. So, as they start rolling in, make sure to celebrate, keep that envelope, and enjoy now being the one to make the decision!

I got into UD (SO EXCITED) and would love to go there but one thing is holding me back. Do you know anything about being gay at UD? How accepting are students? Are the clubs or organizations for gay students?

Hello! Congratulations on getting in. This is when it starts getting fun! This is a great question that many people are probably wondering about. There is definitely a gay community on campus. There is an Allies group and a student run organization called HAVEN that holds events and meetings and encourages a safe and comfortable home at UD. An interesting fact about campus is that there is a weekly radio program on WVUD called “Out Radio.” I don’t know much about the specific personal experiences of students, but I have seen that there are openly gay, comfortable students and the general student population is accepting.

The website for HAVEN is http://sites.udel.edu/haven/

They have additional information if you are interested.

Here is a much overdue PHOTO FRIDAY! We get so many letters from all over the world to the Admissions Office. Just decided to snap a picture. Happy Friday!

Always fun alphabetizing and opening mail in admissions with my Co-worker/ Fellow Blogger!

So I don’t often talk about things outside of my work and...

So I don’t often talk about things outside of my work and college-y things, but there is a lot more to living on campus than that. Although Newark is a small “college town,” there are definitely some hidden gems. One of my favorite ones that I wish I could visit way more often is way down east on Main Street, past the dollar tree and that shady theater. There is a perfect little antique shop. Each room that you walk through has the most wonderful tiny treasures. Maybe it is the lover of material culture within me, but I find it to be the most comfortable thing on earth to be surrounded interesting objects and things from the past, each holding its own story, eventually finding its way to that spot on the shelf. For a place that looks small (and adorable) from the outside, the inside is packed and seems to go on forever.

This post I’m going to talk about something very near and...

This post I’m going to talk about something very near and dear to my heart: my cactus Spike.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but I love this plant. I smuggled it from a trashy grave after a dining hall southwestern theme night last year. My roommate can attest to this weird bond between me and this plant. During breaks, I force her to take it home with her and make sure it doesn’t die and if I open my window during the winter, I move it so it won’t freeze.

A cactus is practically a pre-practice for an actual pet, one that you rarely have to feed and never have to clean up after. You have to actively try to kill it. So, for all of those college students that want something green and living to look at those long dark nights of studying for orgo exams and writing 20 page papers, I’d recommend a good ol’ classic cactus.

So it begins...

I got my first taste of spring semester sickness out of the way. Good thing it was the weekend and after only the first week. Other than that, I have little to report on. I’m thoroughly excited to be taking a ceramics course, as well as a new object conservation internship. I’ve never done any form of pottery and I have always wanted to learn how to use those snazzy pottery wheels to make a copious number of mugs.
